Monique Hassan, MD

Monique Hassan, MD, is a bariatric surgeon and an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at The Baylor College of Medicine – Temple Campus.

Dr. Hassan completed her undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and her master’s in Biological Sciences at Drexel University. She was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences before completing her general surgery residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA, in 2012. As an Army surgeon, Dr. Hassan was initially stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, and later deployed to Afghanistan with a forward surgical unit. She then moved to Fort Sill, OK, where she served as the Medical Director for the Bariatric Surgery Program from 2013 to 2017. Dr. Hassan completed two additional deployment tours to Iraq and Syria while serving in the Army.

After her 2017 honorable discharge from the Army, Dr. Hassan completed her Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. She then joined the Baylor Scott and White Department of Surgery in Temple, TX, where she focuses on treating and managing obesity. Dr. Hassan specializes in laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive and revisional surgical procedures, such as sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, duodenal switch, endoscopy, and the placement of intragastric balloons.

Dr. Hassan has been published in multiple peer-reviewed surgical journals and has presented her work at numerous national meetings. Additional accolades include certification by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Obesity Medicine and Focus Practice Designation for Bariatric Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. In addition, she is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, where she is a Member-at-Large of the Executive Council. Dr. Hassan also holds a Master’s in Business Administration focusing on Health Care Quality from The George Washington University School of Business.

Dr. Hassan is married and enjoys spending time with her family traveling the world. She is an avid fitness fan, crushing her Peloton rides and participating in CrossFit workouts.
