Sarah McLaughlin, MD

Sarah A. McLaughlin, M.D., is chair of the Department of Surgery and a consultant in the Division of Surgical Oncology at the Mayo Clinic in Florida, with a joint appointment as a consultant in Quantitative Health Sciences. Dr. McLaughlin is the Deputy Director for Disease Groups for the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center and has served as the medical director of the Robert and Monica Jacoby Center for Breast Health, and she is a member of the Mayo Clinic Board of Trustees. She joined the staff of Mayo Clinic in 2007 and holds the academic rank of professor of surgery, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Dr. McLaughlin attended the University of Missouri where she earned her medical degree with distinction. She completed her internship and residency in general surgery at Mayo Clinic, and as a Mayo Clinic Scholar, she completed a breast surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

As a surgeon, Dr. McLaughlin treats patients with breast cancer, breast health concerns and lymphedema with a focus on survivorship after breast cancer treatment. As the medical director for the Center of Breast health, she helped develop an improved access process for breast cancer patients in addition shechampioned a cross training interdisciplinary care model for providers. She has been integral in developing the integrated model of breast care on the Florida campus.

Dr. McLaughlin’s research is focused on breast cancer, high-risk features of cancer, lymphedema etiology and prediction methods. She is frequently invited to give presentation
on her work, and she has achieved over 140 publications in numerous peer-reviewed journals. She serves as a section editor of Annals of Surgical Oncology Insights and helped develop the International Consortium Health Outcome Measures for breast cancer. She also holds reviewer responsibilities for prominent scientific journals. She is involved nationally in the American Society of Breast Surgeons and the Society of Surgical Oncology and has chaired numerous committees and task forces for both organizations.

In recognition of her work, Dr. McLaughlin has received many honors and awards, including
the Faculty Teacher of the Year Award in the Department of Surgery at Mayo Clinic School
of Graduate Medical Education and Outstanding Course Director and Outstanding Faculty in Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development. The city of Jacksonville recognizes Dr. McLaughlin as a Health care Hero for her contributions to the Jacksonville breast cancer community.
