Scott Gallagher, MD, FACS

After medical school at Ohio State and residency/research training at USF, Dr. Gallagher joined the faculty at USF Health in Tampa, where he helped build the Bariatric Surgery program and became the only Endocrine Surgeon. He was recruited away from academic surgery in 2011 to become the Founding Director of the Novant Acute Care Surgery Program in Winston Salem, NC where he developed the ACS service as the original Medical Director at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center (the 900-bed, tertiary care, flagship hospital for Novant Health). Building on that experience, Dr. Gallagher was recruited back to academic surgery at Duke in 2018 to lead the new Duke Raleigh ACS Program and General Surgery as well as the Director of Nutrition/TPN Services.

He is a member of multiple professional organizations including the American College of Surgeons, for which he is the Past-Chair of the Committee on Inter-Professional Education & Practice through which he served for 6 years on the ARC-PA (the Accreditation Review Commission for the Education of the Physician Assistant, the sole accrediting body for PA programs) and is finishing his 7th year as liaison to the National Board for Surgical Technology & Surgical Assisting (the primary credentialing organization for surgical technologists and surgical first assistants.) He has numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. Dr. Gallagher has worked with Dr. Ross since residency and has supported the development of the International Women in Surgery Career Symposium from its inception throughout more than a decade of expansion #HeforShe.
