Susan Pories, MD

Susan Pories, MD, FACS is Professor of Surgery, Vice-Chair for Quality and Safety, and Director of the Rutgers Breast Center at University Hospital, New Jersey Medical School Department of Surgery. Previously she was Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Hoffman Breast Center at Mount Auburn Hospital. Dr. Pories served as President of the Medical Staff at Mount Auburn Hospital. She was cofounder and Associate Co-Director of the Arts and Humanities Initiative at Harvard Medical School. She currently represents the Association of Women Surgeons on the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Board of Governors. She previously served as Chair of the ACS Women in Surgery Committee (WiSC) and President of the Association of Women Surgeons. Honors include the A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award from Harvard Medical School, Shirley Driscoll Dean’s Leadership Award for the Enhancement of Women’s Careers at Harvard Medical School, the Rheta Foster Award for the Care of Breast Cancer Patients and Their Families from Mount Auburn Hospital, and Honorary Fellowship in the Society of Black Academic Surgeons. Dr. Pories went to medical school and completed her surgical residency at the University of Vermont. She completed a surgical oncology research fellowship at the New England Deaconess Hospital and a Medical Education Fellowship at Mount Auburn Hospital, Harvard Medical School. Books edited by Dr. Pories include The Soul of a Doctor, The Soul of a Patient, Navigating Your Surgical Career: The AWS Guide to Success, First and Second Edition; The Pocket Mentor Association of Women Surgeons, Sixth Edition, Cancer: Biography of a Disease, and In the Kitchen with Your Favorite Chefs.
